Glen Affric

Postby TheSeagull on Wed Sep 23, 2009 7:56 pm

Hi,
Planning to go to Glen Affric over the weekend, would love to see:
Deer (Especially Red and Sika)
Wildcat (Unlikely but not impossible!)
Other mammals (Stoat, Weasel, Otter, Fox, Red Squirrel, Hare)
Golden Eagle
Capercaillie
Scottish Crossbill
Crested Tit (Going to Corrimory will probably net this)
Reptiles (Slowworm, Adder)

Anybody know what Glen Affric car park would be best? I'll only be staying for 1-2 hours (due to the driving distance) and am not sure which of the car parks to, well, park. Dog Falls, Loch Beinn a’ Mheadhoin or the River Affric car park?
Thanks,
TheSeagull

If you've only got a couple of hours I'd go for the Dog Fall's car park. The circular walk there should produce Crested Tit (I thought they were unusual at Corrimony as there is only a limited amount of mature Cale forest) and possibly Scottish crossbill. Caper are very scarce in Affric nowadays so you're unlikely to see one.

For red deer you'd need to go to the River Affric car park and go along the north side of the loch - most of the woodland is within a perimeter deer fence and FC do a lot of deer control. You may get golden eagle out over the open ground as well. As for wildcat!! I've been in the Highlands 15 years and haven't seen a live wildcat. A couple of good dead specimens on the road and one feral with a lot of wildcat in it (chunky, bottle brush tail, flat ears but combined with a nice white bib!)

Good luck

Simon
